One of the great things about Saigon is that it’s got lots of great places to drink beer. Drinking beer is almost as much a part of the culture here as drinking coffee. In fact you could almost say that the woman here like drinking coffee and then men like drinking beer. It really is an almost even split. So, of course, along with great coffee shops you also have some great places to drink beer. The establishments listed below may not necessarily represent the very best or most popular, as it’s hard to determine that since most people have their own favorite beer joints they like to go to, but it does provide a nice cross section of the different beer establishments here in Vietnam. So next time you come to Saigon, enjoy a delicious beer with your favorite street food.
Bia Sai Gon 73
There are types of bars throughout Vietnam called beer hoi’s (pronounced How) that make and brew their own beer, it’s kind of like the equivalent of street food only instead of food you have beer. Though often street food is sold with the beer hoi. One of the most popular Beer Hoi’s in the city is found right in the middle of the backpacker neighbourhood and is popular with both locals and foreigners. It’s called Bia Sai Gon 73, and looks as unprepossessing as it’s name. but it’s location and cheap prices make it a popular place to grab a beer on a hot day. A beer here costs about 10,000 VND or 50 cents, so it’s an easy place to while away a few hours visiting with friends and drinking some watery homemade beer. It’s not the nicest place to drink beer, but it’s certainly one of the more interesting.
Bia Hoi An Hoi
This is a bia hoi that is popular mostly with Vietnamese, but has begun to get more popular with foreigners as well. It’s located close to the city center, about a block away from the Reunification Palace and Post office. It’s a fun and lively place to drink beer, especially on a Friday or Saturday night and, of course, features plenty of cheap beer. It also have a varitety of fried street food snacks to go with your beer. It’s centrally located to a lot of good places to eat on a rather quiet side street. So you can pop in for a beer and relax before going to get some dinner. Or it’s a nice place to grab a beer after you finish eating at one of the restaurants.
Gammer Beer Hall
There’s a growing number of German style beer halls in Saigon, and they are all great, but this is the one that has one of the best reputations. This is a hugely popular beer hall and is located quite close to the Reunification palace (1 block) and other tourist sites. The food here is all Vietnamese and it’s delicious, but what really makes this place special is the beer. They brew their own beer here and they have a light pilsner and a dark stout. The Stout is particularly good, though both are great, and it’s easy to drink your fill of some fantastic beer and eat some great Vietnamese cuisine at the same time. This should be on every visitors list of places to go while in Saigon.
Hoa Vien brauhaus
This is another famous Beer Hall in Saigon, largely because it was the first beer hall to open in Saigon in 1995. Since then they’ve also opened establishments in Hanoi and Mui ne as well as other locations in Vietnam. It also offers a light and dark beer and both are excellent. The atmosphere is very reminiscent of a beer hall you might find in Germany and the food is largely german too. It’s a bit more expensive than some of the other places featured here, but the beer is well worth it, especially the blonde ale.
This is a relative newcomer to the Saigon scene, but it has proven to be hugely popular. There are now several of these places scattered all around Saigon. It is very similar to a bar in America called Hooters and in fact it is an awful lot like an American style bar, which might be part of the reason it’s become so popular so fast. It’s got a variety of beer and you can buy the beer in large pony kegs called towers, each tower contains around 10 pints of beer and is perfect for a large group of people wanting to have a few drinks. This combined with beautiful girls and loud music make this a fun and lively venue to drink beer with friends.
Of course this is only a small sampling of the many places to drink beer in Saigon. There is no question that if you want a beer anywhere in Saigon then there is no problem. There are many great places to choose from.
